Unwavering Commitment to Primate Well-Being

Our Promise
At Safer Human Medicine, not only do we utilize established best practices — we have a mandate to further refine them and create new best practices where they are needed. From day one, our program has been built to prioritize animal health and welfare without compromise.
Every operating procedure, animal interaction protocol, and training standard is based on established expertise and designed to reflect what excellence in primate care looks like.

Our Ethical Care Standards
From the moment a primate enters our care, every aspect of their environment has been selected to promote physical health, encourage natural behaviors, and support emotional well-being.
- Naturalistic Enclosures: Built for climbing, foraging, and social interaction
- Trained Care Teams: Daily oversight by expert veterinary staff and behavioral specialists.
- Positive Socialization: Human interaction to promote trust, reduces fear, and improve outcomes.
We maintain an unwavering focus on animal health and welfare—consistent from point of origin to final destination.

Our dedicated staff utilize specialized training and experience to attend to the physical health of our animals while also creating a dynamic environment that attends to their behavioral needs. We emphasize and support animal welfare through a dynamic environmental enrichment program, embracing compassion, sensitivity, and adherence to regulatory guidelines.
Our methodologies, procedures, and equipment are designed and continually evaluated to decrease stress on the animals and improve workflows. While we are a supplier to the industry, we are committed to supporting our clients in adhering to the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement). All efforts in this regard are overseen by our Animal Use Committee, Attending Veterinarian, and Animal Welfare Advisor.
Built on science. Guided by compassion.
Designed for the future of ethical research.
At Safer Human Medicine,
we are committed to providing an ethically sourced, yet sustainable supply of healthy animals to help support scientific and medical achievement for the benefit of humans and animals.
we recognize that scientific advances will one day end the need for animal research. Until then, we follow the 3Rs and responsibly supply high-quality animals to ethically and sustainably advance medical science.
we believe better welfare isn’t just the right thing to do — it leads to better science. Every animal in our care is treated with respect, compassion, and the highest standards of welfare.

Thoughtful, Evidence-Based Enrichment
We design enrichment programs based on the latest primate behavior science — promoting species-typical activity and psychological stimulation.
Cognitive
- Puzzle feeders, treat tubes, scent discovery tasks
- Weekly problem-solving games
- Monthly changes to enclosure colors, layouts, and textures
Sensory & Physical
- Rotating textures, sounds, and visual stimuli
- Rope bridges, hammocks, and climbing platforms at varied heights
Social
- Positive-reinforcement introductions to compatible peers
- Pair or group housing when appropriate
- Grooming stations and shared foraging enrich bonding
Nutritional
- Fresh produce, dietary biscuits, and rotating foraging challenges
- Scatter feeding and seasonal variety
- Tailored diet formulations to meet varying nutritional needs
Species-Appropriate Environments

Transparent,
Data-Driven Care
From quarantine to daily routines, every data point matters:
- Behavior logs, enrichment plans, and health metrics feed into a unified care record
- Clients receive real-time access to key health data
- Automated alerts flag changes (e.g., weight, temperature, appearance) for immediate veterinary response

Regulation &
Oversight
SHM meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements, with added internal and external oversight:
- Licensed and permitted with federal, state, and local authorities.
- Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) monitors compliance and drives continuous improvement.
- Veterinary-led program: A multidisciplinary team runs a comprehensive clinical-health and environmental-enrichment program, with training in clinical and behavioral medicine.

Comprehensive Health Monitoring
Every primate receives gold-standard care supported by digital systems and real-time monitoring.
30-Day Quarantine & Digital Tracking:
- Daily observations by technicians and veterinarians
- Behaviorist stress monitoring throughout
- All vitals logged into a secure, real-time Laboratory information Management System (LIMS) platform
- Automated alerts notify staff and clients of any deviations, for example, if weight drops >5% in a week, alerts are triggered automatically.

Ongoing Vet Care & External Audits
Post-quarantine, care continues with proactive, multi-tiered health checks:
- Weekly wellness rounds: Eyes, teeth, skin, mobility, behavioral check
- Monthly behavioral audits: Enrichment logs and social dynamics reviewed
- Quarterly unannounced visits: Conducted by external veterinarians and welfare specialists
All findings feed into a biannual welfare report shared with clients, including action items and follow-ups.

Environments That Support Natural Behavior
We build spaces that empower choice, movement, and social interaction:
- Multi-tier platforms with climbing structures, hammocks, and perches
- Foraging areas and scatter zones
- Visual barriers to reduce conflict and promote exploration
- Screened-in facilities that protect biosecurity without compromising light and airflow
- Remote processing areas to reduce handling-related stress during health checks
